HISTORICAL PROFILE OF SDA NMTC, ASANTA
The SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Asanta is situated in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region of Ghana. The College was established in 2007 by the South-West Ghana Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church under the leadership of Pastor Dr. Thomas Techie Ocran.
The Ghana Adventist Health Service (GAHS) Secretariate, led by Pastor Dr. Kwabena Annor Boafo, who was the director, championed the establishment of the college in Asanta. He collaborated with the Ministry of Health to get administrative approval and accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana (N&MC).
He facilitated getting two professional nurses, Lily O. Asare and Ellen Opoku Boamah, to manage the college as principal and vice principal, respectively. He also included an accountant, Mr. Amos Aboagye, the first chaplain the late Pastor Atta Poku, three nurses, Regina Adu, Cynthia Arthur, and Grace Dadzie, and the first security personals in persons of Elder Wilson Cobbinah, Mr. Albert Kofi Tawiah, Mr. Peter Minnah Attobrah, and Mr. Elvis Kofi Nyamekye.
The college operates under the cardinal principles and philosophy of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which seeks to win souls for Christ through a holistic approach to achieving quality healthcare in families, households, and communities—fostering a committed effort to treat all with human dignity, respect, and tolerance.
The initiative by the Seventh-day Adventist Church to establish this college demonstrates effective collaboration and partnership between public and mission institutions in training health workers in Ghana.
This was in response to the Ghana Ministry of Health’s policy to train middle-level healthcare providers to augment the capacity of health workers for primary healthcare delivery at all levels, especially in rural communities.
Since its establishment in 2007 as a Health Assistant Training School, the college has produced 17 cohorts of Nurse Assistant Clinical graduates who have been deployed by the Ministry of Health to facilities predominantly in rural areas, providing healthcare services throughout the country.
In 2012, the College commenced POST Nurse Assistant Clinical and Nurse Assistant Preventive (PNAC/NAP) Midwifery training and has produced 12 cohorts of graduates, who are currently working in their respective health facilities.
Lily O. Asare served as principal from 2007 to 2016 before Ellen Opoku Boamah took over as the acting principal and later became the substantive principal to date.
During the period of 2016, the college attained a diploma-awarding status with accreditation from Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&MC) to commenced a Registered General Nursing (RGN) program, and has produced 7 cohorts of RGN graduates who have been deployed by the Ministry of Health to various facilities.
Fast forward in 2019, the college had accreditation from GTEC and N&MC to run the Registered Midwifery program. This started with 84 students and has since produced 3 cohorts.
In 2023, the college began two diploma programs in Nutrition and Dietetics after obtaining accreditation from GTEC, Ministry of Health, and the Allied Health Professional Council. Work is currently ongoing assiduously to attain a degree-awarding status in the coming years.
The SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training College stands tall amongst the Nursing and Midwifery Training Colleges in the country. The college is a member of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG).
