HISTORICAL PROFILE OF SDA NMTC, ASANTA

The SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Asante, is situated in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region of Ghana. The College was established in 2007 by the South-West Ghana Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church under the leadership of Pastor Dr. Thomas Techie Ocran.

The establishment was in response to the Ghana Ministry of Health’s policy to train middle-level healthcare providers to augment the capacity of health workers for primary healthcare delivery at all levels, especially in rural communities. The college is a member of the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG). The initiative by the Seventh-day Adventist Church to establish this college demonstrates effective collaboration and partnership between public and mission institutions in training health workers in Ghana. The College operates under the cardinal principles and philosophy of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which seeks to win souls for Christ through a holistic approach to achieving quality healthcare in families, households, and communities—fostering a committed effort to treat all with human dignity, respect, and tolerance.

Since its establishment in 2007 as a Health Assistant Training School, the college has produced 17 cohorts of Nurse Assistant Clinical graduates who have been deployed by the Ministry of Health to facilities predominantly in rural areas, providing healthcare services throughout the country.

In 2012, the college commenced POST NAC/NAP midwifery training and has produced 12 cohorts of graduates who are currently working in their respective health facilities.

In 2015, the college attained diploma-awarding status and commenced a Registered General Nursing program. The college has produced 8 cohorts of RGN graduates who have been deployed by the Ministry of Health to various facilities.

In 2019, the college introduced the Registered Midwifery program with 84 students and has produced 3 cohorts from that department.

In 2023, the college began two diploma programs in nutrition and dietetics and is currently working assiduously to attain degree-awarding status in the coming years.
